Talks between the Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Irsen Kücük, and INGO DMW Chairman Günther Meinel served to promote understanding for resolving the conflict between North and South Cyprus. Concrete measures were agreed upon that INGO Diplomaten International will implement.
This is by no means about political influence, but about safeguarding the human rights of all sides. For example, the NEAR EAST University in the Turkish part of Cyprus is excluded from the Bologna Process, which means considerable disadvantages for its students and constitutes a burden. The Council of Europe / European Region of UNESCO provides the framework for recognizing qualifications in higher education in the European region as well as the convention on the recognition of studies, diplomas, and degrees. Graduates of NEAR EAST University in the Turkish part of Cyprus are de facto excluded from this. DMW will advocate for clarifying this inconsistency with the Council of Europe / European Region of UNESCO.
The university’s faculty members are professors from the USA, England, and Europe who teach according to European educational standards, including the law faculty. There is a human rights issue here that urgently needs a solution. The landing boycott for tourist charter flights also inhibits Northern Cyprus’s economic development.
The delegation also included Prof. Tümer Garip, Dr. Irfan S. Günel, and Dr. Erhan Ercin, Director of the European Coordination Center at the Ministry Office. INGO, urgently called to Cyprus, can make an important contribution here, drawing on experience from other cases, in order to broaden the foundation for previous activities.
The aim of this initiative is to revive previous cooperation efforts between Turkish and Greek Cypriots, to involve new segments of the population in these activities, to create a dialogue between parties, mass organizations, and media that have so far avoided intercommunal dialogue, and by broadening this overall social dialogue to open a basis for new initiatives to solve the Cyprus problem. It was a starting point to revive fundamental rights through a strong judiciary and to fight injustice!
NEAR EAST University is one of the most modern universities in Europe. With 21,000 students from 16 countries, it meets international educational standards. The university hospital, with a capacity of 500 beds, specializes as a heart and cancer treatment center. The most modern high-performance technologies are part of its equipment. The dental clinic is one of the most modern international facilities and provides patient care that meets current medical standards.
With 1.5 million books and worldwide electronic networking, the university library offers extensive and up-to-date teaching materials. The hospital, with experienced, highly qualified staff from six countries, meets the highest medical demands. Cancer diseases are treated with a high success rate.
So far, the campus includes the university, the library, the university hospital, the dental clinic, and administration. Additional facilities and research centers will be realized in the next two years. An agreement on scientific exchange was concluded with the university.
